Every great event has its champions โ those who believe in its potential from the very beginning and stand beside it as it grows. For the Yeppoon Running Festival, CQUniversity has been one of those champions.
Since the festivalโs inaugural year, CQUniversity has been more than just a sponsor โ theyโve been a steadfast partner, advocate, and integral part of the eventโs success story. From the early days of modest crowds to todayโs thriving, regionally significant celebration of fitness and community spirit, CQUniversity has supported the festivalโs evolution at every step. Their commitment reflects a shared vision: building a healthier, more connected Capricorn Coast.
Over the years, weโve seen their students and staff line up at the start line, offer recovery support post-race, and cheer on the sidelines โ not as outsiders, but as part of the very heartbeat of the festival. Their ongoing presence has helped shape the inclusive, uplifting atmosphere that runners and spectators alike now associate with the Yeppoon Running Festival.
We have asked Elle Cullen, Senior Executive Officer in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and President, some interesting questions to hear more about what this long-standing partnership means to CQUniversity, and how it ties into their broader mission to foster wellbeing, education and community engagement across Central Queensland.
1. CQUniversity is now a long-term partner of the Yeppoon Running Festival. What does this ongoing sponsorship mean to the university?
Our continued partnership with the Yeppoon Running Festival reflects CQUniversityโs strong commitment to supporting local initiatives that promote health, wellbeing and community connection. We see real value in supporting events that unite the community, inspire personal goals and contribute to the vibrancy of the Capricorn Coast.
2. How does this partnership reflect the broader mission and values of CQUniversity, particularly around community wellbeing and engagement?
CQUniversity exists to change lives – and that goes beyond what happens in our lecture theatres. Our values include engagement, inclusiveness and a can-do spirit, all of which are embodied in events like this. Supporting the Yeppoon Running Festival is just one way we live out our commitment to enhancing community wellbeing and building strong, active and connected regions.
3. As an education leader, how does CQU see its role in promoting not just learning, but also health, fitness, and holistic wellbeing in the community?
We take a whole-of-person approach to education. That means supporting our students, staff and communities to thrive not just academically, but physically and mentally as well. Through our sport science and allied health programs, applied research, partnerships and sponsors like this one, and health initiatives – like 10,000 Steps, a CQUniversity-led program that has helped millions of Australians become more active – we actively promote lifelong wellbeing. Events like the Yeppoon Running Festival align perfectly with this mission by encouraging healthy habits, personal goal setting and stronger community connections.
4. How does CQUniversity work to connect with the local community outside the classroom – through partnerships like this and beyond?
As the university for Central Queensland, weโre proud of the role we play as a community partner. Whether itโs through sponsorships and partnerships, research projects, health outreach or local volunteering, CQUniversity staff and students are always looking for ways to give back and get involved. The Yeppoon Running Festival is just one great example of how we stay connected in our community.
5. Will there be CQU students, staff or alumni taking part in this yearโs race? Any seasoned runners or first-timers?
Absolutely! Each year, we have a fantastic mix of staff, students and alumni hitting the course. Some are seasoned runners aiming for a PB, while others are walking their first 5K. Our Vice-Chancellor and President is an avid runner too and loves running in the Yeppoon Running Festival!
Itโs a great reminder that health and fitness look different for everyone – and that every step counts.
6. Do you have any standout memories or stories from last yearโs event – or past festivals – that left a lasting impression?
We always love seeing our CQUniversity physiotherapy students in action, offering recovery support to runners after the race. Itโs such a valuable experience for our students to apply their skills in a real-world setting, and the participants really appreciate the chance to get some much-needed recovery and care. Itโs a win-win for everyone involved.
CQUniversity’s involvement in the Yeppoon Running Festival is more than just sponsorship โ itโs a hands-on celebration of community, education, and active living. Weโre proud to have them with us for another incredible year!
